Sky's the Limit in Full Swing

Only a limited number of spots remain for the jump. Individuals interested in jumping or in learning more about EmpowerTech, the only assistive technology center in Los Angeles that provides computer training to persons with physical and developmental disabilities, can visit www.empowertech.org. Or Sign up at http://www.active.com/donate/skysthelimit

The event, which is open to the public, requires individual jumpers to recruit friends, relatives, and colleagues to sponsor a jump by pledging money to support EmpowerTech. The minimum total pledge per jumper is $1,000 ($750 for students and persons with disabilities).

Joan Anderson, Executive Director, of EmpowerTech commented, “When we began to publicize this event, people often joked, ‘I hope you have a good lawyer.’ Well, now we have a team of world-class lawyers—jumping to raise money for EmpowerTech and the incredible students we serve. “

“Sky’s the Limit” begins with a first jump at 7:30 A.M. at Lake Elsinore Skydive in Lake Elsinore, CA, followed by 20 jumpers per hour throughout the day. All jumps will be “tandem” jumps with professionals from Lake Elsinore Skydive. On the ground there will be live entertainment, kids’ activities, food and fun for the whole family.

Anderson stated, “We are so excited about Tom Lange’s decision to jump. He is an inspiration to us all and living proof that you can do ANYTHING with the right attitude and proper support. I am directing all of my fundraising efforts to sponsor Tom’s jump and I encourage the public to consider sponsoring a jumper, as well.“

Founded in 1986 as the “Computer Access Center” by a group of concerned parents and professionals, EmpowerTech today uses modern Assistive Technology to help persons with disability obtain the skills and the confidence to perform important computing tasks that many take for granted such as accessing and using the Internet and creating and reading documents. From programs for blind/low-vision adults to classes for disabled children, EmpowerTech uses state of the art Assistive Technology to help disabled persons experience the freedom and fulfillment of self-sufficiency.

EmpowerTech is funded entirely through grants, fee for service and individual donations. To learn more about “Sky’s The Limit” and to view some of EmpowerTech’s many, many success stories, please visit: http://www.empowertech.org.

Empowertech Names Joan Anderson Executive Director

"Seasoned Non-Profit Executive to Direct Operations and Fundraising for Los Angeles-Based Agency That Utilizes Assistive Technology to Empower People with Physical and Developmental Disabilities"

LOS ANGELES, January 13, 2009 -- EmpowerTech, a Los Angeles-based non-profit that educates, trains, and supports people with physical and developmental disabilities through computer-related assistive technology, today announced the appointment of Joan Anderson as the agency’s new Executive Director. Anderson will oversee daily operations, marketing and public relations, and will design and implement a new fundraising campaign for the organization.

EmpowerTech President Diane Prust commented, “Recruiting a hands-on, permanent Executive Director for EmpowerTech has been a top priority for the organization. EmpowerTech is fortunate to have many talented, energetic and committed professionals and volunteers to advance its mission. Adding an experienced, efficient Executive Director to ensure that we are making the most of our assets and resources will enhance our ability to meet our goals and help those in our community who are most in need.“

Anderson most recently served as the Executive Director of the American Heart Association’s Ventura County, CA division, and Chief Development Officer for Angel’s Flight West, a non-profit organization that provides free air transport to people in need of medical treatment. Anderson stated, “EmpowerTech is well positioned to grow to the next level. The organization already has a tremendously talented and dedicated staff and a track record of achievement. With a renewed emphasis on fundraising and publicity, EmpowerTech can attract the additional resources it needs to cement its position as one of the preeminent service providers to persons with physical and developmental disabilities.”

Founded in 1986 as the “Computer Access Center,” EmpowerTech employs the wonders of modern computer-assistive technology to help persons with disabilities such as vision, hearing, motor or cognitive limitations, achieve a better quality of life, including the ability to communicate, work and participate in recreation.
